HAINES — First place in the Fourth of July Parade was the float, “Annette’s Troupers,” because of the use of the parade theme, and the illustration of several parts of Haines history including ”Soap Suds Alley,” Anway strawberrys, and the clear message that this is the 100th anniversary of Haines’ organization as a city.
Second place went to The Saw Shop, a six-wheel ATV colorfully decorated with a clear illustration of chainsaws, and the motto, “A cut above.” The saw shop is owned and operated by Pete and Diana Lapham.
Third place went to the American Legion Color Guard, with representatives from four different services, and to the Cub Scouts who had one of the most enthusiastic groups in the parade. The scouts had several marchers on foot, accompanied by some off-road ATV’s.
This year’s parade had 22 entries, and was judged by Bill & Rocki Rostad, Gary & Juanita Lidholm and Joe & Sue Poor, with Robert Venables as narrator. Thanks to all of the volunteers who made the parade happen.
Cool and breezy weather didn’t dampen the festivities as Haines celebrated the Fourth of July in grand style.

By chance we were passing through Haines during the July 4th holiday. Although 6000 miles away from home the people of Haines made us feel like we were part of the community at the VFD BBQ and the raft race. This was our first trip to Alaska and Haines will always be the town that comes to mind when we think of our great vacation. Many thanks to all our new friends. Danny & Tammy Godbey and Mike & Judy Akers from Kentucky.
