SITKA, Feb. 7, 2012 — The SEARHC WISEWOMAN Women’s Health Program and Bartlett Regional Hospital are happy to announce the Spring 2012 schedule for the mobile mammogram program.
The mobile mammography van will visit Haines, Kake, Gustavus, Skagway, Yakutat and Angoon this spring and early summer. The van is scheduled to visit Kake on May 1-4, Haines on May 9-22, Angoon on May 24-30, Skagway on June 4-7, Yakutat on June 13-18, and Gustavus on June 22 (no weekend appointments). Women are encouraged to contact their local clinics prior to the scheduled visit because they will need to receive a clinical breast exam before they can get their mammograms. Read more->

HAINES–Take cub brown bear
On 9-16-11, Gregg A. Johnson, age 60 of Haines was cited by Wildlife Troopers for taking a cub grizzly bear that was accompanied by a sow and a sibling cub. Johnson was given an arraignment date of 10-4-11 in the Haines district court. The bear was seized by AWT. A brown bear is considered a cub for the first two years of its life. Read more->

By Editor, on November 25th, 2010  Official DOT&PF photo by Roger W. Wetherell GUSTAVUS — The Alaska Marine Highway System made its first sailing to Gustavus Tuesday with a fully loaded car deck. This maiden voyage into Gustavus initiates regular service to what, until now, has been the largest off-system community in Southeast Alaska.
Construction of a new causeway was completed this month allowing AMHS vessels to safely dock in Gustavus. Read more->
By Roger Maynard, on June 28th, 2010  Salmon River area. Gustavus historical photo GUSTAVUS — The community is celebrating its new Falls Creek Hydroelectric Project, which came on line last year. Now its diesel generators have been replaced with cheap, clean and plentiful hydroelectric power. Gustavus’ diesel generators cost 74 cents per kilowatt-hour to produce power during the peak of fuel prices, with a more recent price of 39 cents per kwh. Falls Creek will bring that cost to under 20 cents.
