State Ferry Accommodates Stranded Tourists in Haines

From KINY Radio news:
Wednesday’s wind storm in Southeast Alaska allowed the State Ferry Malaspina to play host to scores of unexpected guests.

Brenda Hewitt of the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities says the Malaspina was docked in Haines since it couldn’t make it to Skagway because of the strong winds. She says 60 tourists were also stranded there since they also couldn’t make it back to their cruise ship in Skagway, so the Marine Highway accommodated them onboard the Malaspina.

The visitors returned to Juneau Thursday morning aboard the Malaspina; Princess Cruises footed the bill.

State back to planning on Juneau highway

By Richard Mauer | ADN
After the state lost in two courts, the Parnell administration said Wednesday it would prepare a new environmental impact statement for a 50-mile road from Juneau to a proposed ferry terminal near Haines and Skagway rather than appeal again, this time to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The state announced its decision to go back to the planning process two months after the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed the decision of a federal judge in Alaska, who said the original environmental impact statement for the Juneau Access Project, from 2006, was inadequate.

NOAA rescuers free whale calf from fishing line

NOAA photo

By Mike Dunham | ADN
Federal officials spent the better part of Wednesday near Juneau trying to remove a buoy line from a 5-month old humpback whale.

The call came in around 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Moran said. Boats taking tourists on whale viewing trips spotted the calf and its mother in Lynn Canal near the Shrine of St. Therese, a Catholic retreat north of Juneau. A buoy bobbed between the whales and it looked as if they might be ensnarled with the line. The lab’s “large whale disentanglement team” — both scientists and non-scientific staff — was on the water by 10 a.m.

Proposed road to extend northwest from Juneau with ferry connections

SAN FRANCISCO–Yesterday, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel ruled 2-1 that the state and federal transportation officials failed to consider a key alternative to building the Juneau access road north along Lynn Canal: beefing up existing ferry service.  Their ruling affirmed a 2009 decision by U.S. District Judge John Sedwick, who said the 2006 environmental impact statement supporting the road was flawed and inadequate.   Read more->

Juneau Assembly special meeting on redistricting
“Juneau would have to reach ‘outside the line…’”

JUNEAU–A special meeting of the City and Borough of Juneau Assembly is scheduled for  today (Thursday) to take up the pending reapportionment of Alaska’s election districts.

According to a news report from KINY radio, Juneau falls about 4500 people short of filling two legislative districts with the average of 17,700 people.  That means Juneau would have to reach outside the current district boundaries to constitute a normal legislative district.

At the Haines Borough Assembly meeting last Tuesday evening, the assembly unanimously passed resolution 11-03-267 “calling on the State of Alaska Redistricting Board to maintain the Haines Borough in a House district that is ‘a relatively integrated socio-economic area’ and not a part of the City and Borough of Juneau.”  Read more->
