Murkowski to visit Skagway, Haines

Alaska U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski will tour a host of Southeast Alaska communities over the President’s Day recess.

According to a press release from Murkowski’s office, the Senator will kick off her Southeast swing Tuesday in Skagway for a roundtable discussion there.

From Skagway, Murkowski will travel to Haines on Wednesday for another roundtable discussion at the Bald Eagle Museum before heading to Yakutat where she will meet with state and local officials at the ANB Hall there.

Senator Murkowski will visit Juneau on Thursday for her annual address to the Alaska State Legislature before leaving for Ketchikan for a press conference on Friday.

Small bear makes big mess in Ketchikan grocery store

The Ketchikan Daily News and KRBD radio reported a small black bear cub walked in the front door of Tatsuda’s IGA. The scared animal found its way to a produce cooler, where it made a mess.

Meat department manager Joe Stollar filmed the bear’s capture. He said the little bear was just trying to hide.

Coast Guard responding to grounding, vessel fire near Ketchikan

JUNEAU–The Coast Guard is responding to the grounding and a subsequent fire aboard the 58-foot fishing vessel Legend at Bostwick Point about eight miles south of Ketchikan Monday.

A Coast Guard Station Ketchikan small boat crew with Marine Safety Detachment Ketchikan pollution investigators aboard assessed the Legend Monday morning and reported the approximately 700 gallons of diesel and a catch of 2,000 pounds of salmon aboard were consumed by the fire. Read more->

AAA Awards Free Computer to Haines Classroom

Feds in Ketchikan Choose Wood Heat
GSA announces Ketchikan Federal Building will switch to biomass boiler

KETCHIKAN–The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) on December 21, announced a contract award to install a biomass boiler system in the Ketchikan, Alaska federal building.

A $4.5 million investment of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds will allow GSA to replace the outdated, inefficient boiler which has been has served the building since it was constructed in 1951.  The old boiler has reached the end of its useful life and GSA will install a new sustainable biomass boiler.
