JUNEAU–The Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) announced today that the M/V Matanuska continues to sail its scheduled service after the May 7 allision with the Ocean Beauty Seafoods dock in Petersburg, Alaska.
“We are particularly thankful that there were no injuries resulting from the accident,” said Michael Neussl, Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities Deputy Commissioner for Marine Operations. Read more->

PETERSBURG — One of Alaska’s largest state ferries hit a seafood processing plant’s dock head-on Monday, causing significant damage, officials said.
The 408-foot Matanuska ferry hit the dock belonging to Ocean Beauty, said Jeremy Woodrow, a spokesman for the Alaska Department of Transportation.

PETERSBURG, AK (2011-07-19) The city of Petersburg has filed one of only three legal challenges statewide to the Alaska Redistricting Board’s plan for new legislative boundaries. Two other lawsuits on the plan come from the Fairbanks area. Petersburg’s city council met in a closed door executive session with its attorney on the case Monday and the state redistricting board did likewise earlier in the day.

It was evident from the first minute of play that Saturday night’s varsity basketball game at Karl Ward Gymnasium was going to be different than Friday night’s contest. Haines took the opening tip-off and scored within the first 15 seconds of play, never to trail again. Although it was not a high scoring game, the pace from the start was much quicker than the game on Friday as the Glacier Bear boys out-scored and out-rebounded their Viking opponents throughout the evening.

HAINES–A large crowd filled the Haines High School gymnasium for the Glacier Bear boys home opener conference game with the Petersburg Vikings Friday night. The Vikings won over Haines by 10 points in the Junior Varsity game and for awhile it looked like the Viking varsity might top that in the second match, at one point having a 14 point lead. But a 4th quarter rally by Haines brought the final score to only a four point loss, 43 -47.
Coming off the 3A state championship, the Haines Glacier Bears drew an expectant crowd to the auditorium where a pre-varsity game ceremony honored the 2010 team and unveiled the state championship banner which now graces the north wall of the gym. Read more->
