Paid commentary:
As you all probably know, AP&T has filed an application for a preliminary permit from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for the Connelly Lake Hydroelectric Project (Project). We have read all of the comment letters that have been submitted to FERC as of November 21, 2011, and it seems like there are a few misconceptions about our plans. We’d like to take this opportunity to clarify a few matters regarding our interest in the Connelly Lake site. We have structured this as a series of questions and answers. Read more->

By Roger Maynard, on June 30th, 2011 Congressman Don Young addresses Alaskans at Dyea while District 5 Republican vice-chair Kathy Hosford looks on.
SKAGWAY–Bright, sunny weather greeted Congressman Don Young when he visited Skagway and Dyea Monday afternoon. After a tour of the ore terminal and newly constructed waterfront facilities with city officials, he made an appearance at a District 5 Republican fundraiser at the Chilkoot Trail Outpost in Dyea.
Speaking to a crowd of about 60 people, Young covered subjects from federal control over Alaska and its residents to natural gas, oil and the economy.

If there’s a word to describe Kathy and Fred Hosford, it’s “focused.” When they purchased their Dyea property in 1999, the Hosfords indended to build a bed and breakfast. By 2003 they were living in the Chilkoot Trail Outpost lodge, and by 2003 all of the cabins were ready for occupancy. Now, 8 years later, their beautiful lodge is neat as a pin, and caters to several types of independent travelers from bed and breakfast guests to Chilkoot Trail hikers.
Kathy Hosford was elected vice-chair of the district 5 Republicans in February 2010, and focuses on her job there with the same intensity as she does on building their business. She presented the idea of hosting a fundraiser for the district to Congressman Don Young when he was in Haines, last March. Read more->

By Roger Maynard, on May 5th, 2011 SAN FRANCISCO–Yesterday, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel ruled 2-1 that the state and federal transportation officials failed to consider a key alternative to building the Juneau access road north along Lynn Canal: beefing up existing ferry service. Their ruling affirmed a 2009 decision by U.S. District Judge John Sedwick, who said the 2006 environmental impact statement supporting the road was flawed and inadequate. Read more->

By Editor, on March 9th, 2011 SKAGWAY–At a joint Haines and Skagway Borough Assembly work group meeting Monday evening, members of both bodies discussed subjects of mutual interest, including upper Lynn Canal port development, tourism, the shuttle ferry service, hydropower and the Skagway-Haines energy intertie.
Though the meeting only lasted a little over an hour, there was general agreement that it was a good start toward the two boroughs working together for mutual benefit. Read more->
By Roger Maynard, on March 9th, 2011 Haines power consumption: Hydro vs. Diesel
HAINES–Monday’s joint meeting between the Haines and Skagway borough assemblies underscored a number of issues of mutual concern. Among the most important is just how tenuous is our source of reasonably-priced electrical power.
Presently, Haines receives nearly 100% of its power from hydro projects in or near Skagway. The day the Haines-Skagway undersea cable fails, all of this power will have to be generated by the diesel-fired power plant in Haines. Read more->

SKAGWAY–I have been a passionate and proactive advocate of the Lynn Canal Access Road for as long as I can remember and have no reservation sharing the importance of support. My community of Skagway is a prime example of a rural community withering away from the lack of economic and reliable transportation infrastructure to diversify our economy. Year round jobs are few and far between. Our Skagway public school system has dwindled from a healthy population of 200 to 70 students.
