AAA Awards Free Computer to Haines Classroom

ANCHORAGE–The AAA has announced the award of three computers to Southeast Alaska Educators as part of their Driving Success Computer Grant Program. The recipients are Leigh Horner at Haines Borough School, Mark Woodward at Revilla Alternative School in Ketchikan, and Howard Wayne at Sitka High School. Read more->

Here Comes the Vigilante Crew!
Two young women take positive steps toward the career of their choice

HAINES–If you heard a vigilante crew was looking for you, it would normally give you cause for alarm. But in Haines, it is a reassuring thing.

Sisters Ashely (20) and Amanda (18) Vigilante are two of the newest members of the Haines Emergency Medical Services (EMS) ambulance crew. The pair completed emergency medical technician (EMT) level I training in Haines in September and eagerly sought assignments so they could to get the 10 patient contacts required to attend EMT II training. Now back from a successful 2 ½ weeks in Ketchikan, where the level II course was offered, they are anticipating a future college curriculum that might lead to a medical career. Read more->

American Constitutionalism History Literacy Act
Legislative Bill Would add American Constitution to Required School Curriculum

JUNEAU–Introduced by Wasilla Representative Wes Keller (R), House Bill No. 5 is entitled “An Act requiring a standardized statewide history of American constitutionalism curriculum and a secondary school history of American constitutionalism examination in public schools in the state; and providing for an effective date.

It would require students to pass competency tests in the areas of reading, English, history of American constitutionalism, and mathematics or receive a waiver from the governing body. The full text of the bill may be read here.

School Board: “Not So Fast” to Mosquito Lake Boiler
A September 21st Workshop is planned to explore other options

Mark Twain once quipped that the difference between the right word and the almost-right word is the difference between lightning and the lightning bug. At the August 16th School Board Meeting, Borough Manager Mark Earnest, speaking from the audience, admitted that the Borough administration did not get the communication quite right in the Mosquito Lake School heating situation when dealing with other Borough organizations.

An Education Opportunity Missed

On April 13th, students at Haines High noticed large, professional-quality posters in the school saying “Save Our Beloved Beach” and students were encouraged to attend the evening assembly meeting to protest planned dock developments on the Haines waterfront.

Mosquito Lk. heat; Wind for schools; Strategic Plan

Should the school district spend over $250,000 on a new heating system for Mosquito Lake School? That was one issue that faced the Haines Borough School Board at last night’s meeting. The figure derives from an estimate of the cost to implement an engineer’s plan. The board expressed concern over the high cost and directed the superintendent to work with two board members and the Borough Director of Facilities to develop a Request for Proposal so that other options can be explored.
