Understanding the Global Warming Debate
Is it media laziness, or “bait and switch” on the part of GW advocates?

Warren Meyer | FORBES
Likely you have heard the sound bite that “97% of climate scientists” accept the global warming “consensus”. Which is what gives global warming advocates the confidence to call climate skeptics “deniers,” hoping to evoke a parallel with “Holocaust Deniers,” a case where most of us would agree that a small group are denying a well-accepted reality. So why do these “deniers” stand athwart of the 97%? Is it just politics? Oil money? Perversity? Ignorance?

We are going to cover a lot of ground, but let me start with a hint…

Watchdog says merit of polar bear paper was the issue
Senator asks Interior for clarification on purpose of investigation

The federal investigation into suspended wildlife biologist Charles Monnett has focused on the scientific merit of a 2006 article in which he and a colleague recorded their observations of apparently drowned polar bears in the Arctic, a watchdog group said Tuesday.

In the article, the ADN reports:

[U.S. Senator James Inhofe, R-Okla., has] said that Monnett’s work has been cited by witnesses before his committee and provided “the foundation” for the government’s decision in 2008 to list the polar bear as a threatened species, the first with its survival at risk due to global warming.

“As a result, critical habitat for the polar bear was designated, which added additional layers of onerous regulations to oil and gas development in 187,000 square miles of land in Alaska,” he said, adding that accusations against Monnett’s work “could be serious and have far reaching consequences.”

We Are Finally Seeing Healthy Perspectives on CO2 in the Media

Warren Meyer | CLIMATE-SKEPTIC.COM
Few skeptics doubt or deny that carbon dioxide (CO2) is a greenhouse gas or that it and other greenhouse gasses (water vapor being the most important) help to warm the surface of the Earth. Further, few skeptics deny that man is probably contributing to higher CO2 levels through his burning of fossil fuels, though remember we are talking about a maximum total change in atmospheric CO2 concentration due to man of about 0.01% over the last 100 years.

What skeptics deny is the catastrophe, the notion that man’s incremental contributions to CO2 levels will create catastrophic warming and wildly adverse climate changes. To understand the skeptic’s position requires understanding something about the alarmists’ case that is seldom discussed in the press: the theory of catastrophic man-made global warming is actually comprised of two separate, linked theories, of which only the first is frequently discussed in the media.

U.S. stages submarine exercises in the Arctic Ocean
Changing Arctic will increase the need for submarine and Coast Guard patrols.

By Andrea Shalal-Esa | REUTERS
The United States is staging high-profile submarine exercises in the Arctic Ocean this month as evidence mounts that global warming will lead to more mining, oil production, shipping and fishing in the world’s last frontier.

U.S. Has Cut Emissions–Without Cap and Tax
The government wants to increase control over our economy, not to fight global warming

Dick Morris and Eileen McGann | Townhall.com
While the federal Environmental Protection Administration is about to impose regulations and taxes on carbon emissions by executive fiat — in the name of stopping global climate change — the United States has already dramatically cut its emissions and probably has already complied with the Kyoto/Copenhagen goals for reduced emissions. And this has been done without taxes, without regulations and without government intervention.

Mummified Forest found in Canadian Arctic
“The forest existed when the Arctic climate was warmer than it is today.”

A newly unearthed mummified forest on a remote island in the Canadian Arctic where no trees currently grow is giving researchers a peek into how plants reacted to ancient climate change.

The ancient forest found on Nunavut’s Ellesmere Island which lies north of the Arctic Circle, contained dried out birch, larch, spruce and pine trees. Research scientist Joel Barker of Ohio State University discovered it by chance while camping in 2009.

The forest existed during a time when the Arctic climate shifted from being warmer than it is today to its current frigid state.
