Tok musher Hugh Neff ended a career of near misses and heartbreaks before dawn on Tuesday when he ran down Allen Moore to capture the closest Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race by a single minute.
Neff crossed the finish line in Whitehorse in the pre-dawn darkness at 5:14 a.m. with his nine strongest dogs still in harness. Moore was just a tick of the clock behind with 10 dogs.

Whitehorse’s Jarrid Davy hurtled down the Haines Highway at near record speeds at the Alcan 200 International Snow Machine Road Rally on Saturday.
Averaging a speed of 191 kilometres an hour, Davy was about two kilometres an hour from the record. (Average times include fuel stops.)
Though just off the record, his speed was enough to win his second straight title in the 651cc-open class, one of four divisions won by Yukoners this year.

HAINES–One of the big days of the year for folks who live here is the hazardous waste collection that occurs yearly. It’s our chance to get rid of old paints, solvents, oil and other stuff for which disposal is either difficult or expensive. This service is available to all households and government agencies.
This year’s hazardous waste collection, sponsored by the Haines Borough and Southeast Conference, will be on Friday, July 22 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., or until containers are full. Bring the material to the old Haines Public Works shop yard on Union Street between 5th and 6th avenues. Material should be in the original containers if possible. Read more->

HAINES–Fourteen year old Marcus Deuling was the overall winner of the Ripinsky Run, completing the course in 30 minutes and 26 seconds. Ryan Rice came in a close second overall at 30 minutes 36 seconds, and Scott Didpridge held third place at 30 minutes, 57 seconds.

HAINES–Dozens of people lined the Chilkoot River bridge Saturday afternoon as a home-made raft paddled by Doug Leonhart, Corey Piper and Bob Piper hove into view, pursued by a second raft paddled by Ed Davis, Brad Winge and Kevin Shove. Although paddlers on the second raft worked hard to overtake the Piper raft in the home stretch, it soon became apparent they would not be able to close the 30-yard distance, and the Piper raft easily won.

Greater than Graves, a 3000 mile bicycle ride from Anchorage to San Francisco, California to raise awareness of Graves disease will come through Haines later this week.
Michaela Cui, a recent graduate of the University of Colorado at boulder is one of the organizers of the ride. Recently diagnosed with Graves disease, a disease that attacks the thyroid, she wanted to do something to raise awareness about Graves disease.

By Roger Maynard, on June 11th, 2011 HAINES–For several days Haines folks have been watching the U.S. Coast Guard response boats escort cruise ships to and from Haines and Skagway.
On Saturday, June 11, the USCG is inviting the public to meet the officers and crews, and get a close look at the Defender class response boats in the Haines small boat harbor, space E-13, between noon and 4 p.m.
“We are from Los Angeles,” reports Lt. j.g. Colin Boyle, “We were airlifted to Juneau aboard a C-5 airlift, then traveled to Haines on the Alaska ferry. We’ll be here for a couple of weeks.”
Boyle reports that the unit specializes in event security, and is specially trained to respond to emergencies aboard cruise ships. They are available to do commercial and other vessel inspections on request.

Can you take the Kluane out of the Kluane Mountain Bluegrass Festival? If early ticket sales are any indication, the answer is yes.
Weekend passes for the festival, which runs from June 10 to 12, have nearly sold out. But worry not, bluegrass fans. Organizers intend to also sell tickets to individual events.

Dr. Walter Alexander Soboleff, Sr. passed away at age 102 in his own home in Juneau on Sunday May 22, 2011. He was born on Nov. 14, 1908 in Killisnoo to Anna Hunter and Alexander Sasha Soboleff. His paternal grandparents were Fr. Ivan Alexander Soboleff and Olga Leudke Soboleff, and maternal grandparents were Eaton Hunter and Seigeigé.

ANCHORAGE–New plaques honoring fallen law enforcement officers are unveiled at the Alaska Police Memorial Day 2011 ceremony Friday afternoon May 6, 2011 in front of the State Crime Detection Laboratory. The names of U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer Charles Collins and Hoonah Police Department officers Anthony Wallace and Matthew Tokuoka were added to the memorial this year, joining 59 other names.

Pick up bags starting April 25 at Haines Sanitation. New for 2011 is a recyclables only bag (blue) in addition to the trash bags (yellow). Non-profits earn $3/bag and individuals can credit their bags to a non-profit or earn it towards a dump pass.

The Haines Borough Public Library will be doing their annual “Fine Forgiveness” week as well. If you want your fines forgiven you must come into the library in person and ask at the materials check out desk to have your fines forgiven. And the answer will always be… “Yes!”
Keep in mind this does not include lost books though… you‘re on your own for those!

Partnering with non-profits, legislators, stakeholders, and community members, the governor will lead a march from the steps of the capitol to raise awareness and call for a cultural shift, a shift towards honor and respect for all Alaskans. NOME–John Baker rolled into Nome to win the 2011 Iditarod last Tuesday, but it wasn’t until Sunday night — only a few scant hours after musher Ellen Halverson became the last to complete this year’s race and thus the recipient of the Red Lantern trophy — that the annual Awards Banquet was held, honoring numerous mushers for a variety of accomplishments, including those related to speed, sportsmanship, and care for their dogs.

HAINES–Someone put a hat on the head and stuck a pipe in the mouth of the wild boar’s head hanging on the wall of Port Chilkoot Bible Church. This comical piece of taxidermy was the traveling prize for the winner of the Tall Tale Contest at the 3rd annual Sportsman’s Banquet held by the men of the Bible Church on February 11th.
This year Tony Malone was the clear winner with his tale of the legless squirrel dog, a story he brought with him from lower 48 days. Malon takes the trophy from Gary Lidholm who won last year with a wild tale about king salmon fishing in Lynn Canal. Read more->
