Assembly Moves to Demolish Old School

After years of indecisiveness, the Haines Assembly was unanimous in its decision to raze the old school gym still standing at the corner of 3rd and Main Streets. The decision is based on recent information showing that restoration of the old building is too expensive, and the building is not ideal for either offices or a recreation center.  There is currently no heat or electricity in the building, and it has been standing that way for at least 5 years.

A small group led by Joe Poor and Jack Wenner argued to keep the building, and said they were working on a business plan to keep the building open as a recreation center for the community, but their efforts were too little, too late.  Read more->

Recovery Stalled After Obamacare Passed

By James Sherk | THE HERITAGE FOUNDATION
Private-sector job creation initially recovered from the recession at a normal rate, leading to predictions last year of a “Recovery Summer.” Since April 2010, however, net private-sector job creation has stalled. Within two months of the passage of Obamacare, the job market stopped improving. This suggests that businesses are not exaggerating when they tell pollsters that the new health care law is holding back hiring. The law significantly raises business costs and creates considerable uncertainty about the future. To encourage hiring, Congress should repeal Obamacare.

Seven Alaska Fisherman Have Died This Season
Training, PFDs critical to small-boat fishing safety

Robert Woolsey | KCAW
SITKA, ALASKA (2011-06-27) The death of two Yakutat residents last week (6-20-11) brings to seven the number of commercial fishermen killed this year in Alaska – and the season is just getting started. The fact that all seven lost their lives in open boats – and all were wearing life jackets — has caught the attention of agencies involved in marine safety. There is consensus that it’s time for renewed focus on safety training for the small-boat fleet.

Can Alaska salmon help lower diabetes risk?

ALASKA DISPATCH
A diet of Alaska salmon rich in Omega-3 fatty acids appears to protect [Yup'ik people] from diabetes and heart disease — even when the individuals in question have become obese — according to a recent study that examined eating habits and health in the Yukon Kuskokwim Delta region. The findings underscore what Alaska nutritionists and Native health experts have long argued: Eating wild Alaska salmon along with other traditional foods is uniquely healthy and trumps outdated, often misunderstood dietary recommendations that people should limit their intake of fish.

Our opinion: Medical services in rural Alaska
Top notch service in a remote places

Guardian Flight's King Air B200 can operate out of 2000-foot runways

by Roger Maynard

HAINES — Those of us who choose to live in rural Alaska have learned to live with a lower level of medical care than is available in urban areas.  We consider it a fair trade for the fresh air and freedom.

But a lower level of medical care doesn’t mean less professional.

Diana Lapham’s letter to the editor (see letters & opinions tab) this week highlights the professional actions of the ambulance, clinic and medevac people that serve us in Haines.  Our experiences mirror those of the Pete and Diana.
