THE U.S. FINANCIAL PLAN
In understandable numbers…

Can you imagine running a country using these numbers?

  • United States Tax revenue: $2,170,000,000,000
  • Fed budget: $3,820,000,000,000
  • New debt: $ 1,650,000,000,000
  • National debt: $14,271,000,000,000
  • Recent budget cut: $ 38,500,000,000

Now, remove 8 zeros and pretend it’s a household budget.

  • Annual family income: $21,700
  • Money the family spent: $38,200
  • New debt on the credit card: $16,500
  • Outstanding balance on credit card: $142,710
  • Total budget cuts: $385

REALLY BRINGS THE ISSUE HOME, DOESN’T IT?

Guest Opinion: Steve Jobs and Haines Alaska News

By Gary Lidholm
DENVER, CO–Some days certain “themes” keep showing up in your daily life: On Wednesday as I was returning to my urban Denver home, I passed the United Airlines training facility in the Stapleton area of East Denver. The large buildings of the United complex house simulators and training rooms used by all pilots of United Airlines as well as other carriers. Recently, it was announced that United had purchased 11,000 iPads to give to their pilots. There will now be an iPad in the cockpit to reduce the paper clutter and the amount of aeronautical charts needed on board.   Read more->

Assembly Moves to Demolish Old School

After years of indecisiveness, the Haines Assembly was unanimous in its decision to raze the old school gym still standing at the corner of 3rd and Main Streets. The decision is based on recent information showing that restoration of the old building is too expensive, and the building is not ideal for either offices or a recreation center.  There is currently no heat or electricity in the building, and it has been standing that way for at least 5 years.

A small group led by Joe Poor and Jack Wenner argued to keep the building, and said they were working on a business plan to keep the building open as a recreation center for the community, but their efforts were too little, too late.  Read more->

Remembering 9/11

by Lt. Gov. Meade Treadwell
“Wake up. Look at the television. Our country is under attack.”

That’s how I dragged our kids out of bed – here in the Alaska time zone – the morning of September 11. We held vigil throughout much of the day, prayed, cried, and found joy in the fact that some we had feared dead turned up alive. My wife had worked in the area of the World Trade Center before she moved to Alaska in 1990, and her sister’s husband was there. It turns out his crew of electricians had just left the roof of one of the towers and he was down on the street watching the airplanes hit. Read more->

Federal Judge Blocks State Anti-Child-Porn Law

by Chris Klint and The Associated Press
A federal judge has blocked a state law meant to prevent the spread of child pornography, saying it violates the First Amendment and is too broad in its scope.

U.S. District Court Judge Ralph Beistline permanently barred enforcement of Senate Bill 222, which also makes offensive touching a misdemeanor and intentionally accessing child pornography a class-C felony, based on a provision which would make anyone who operates a website criminally liable for posting material deemed “harmful to minors.” Beistline said that the bill would have chilled free expression.

Seven Alaska Fisherman Have Died This Season
Training, PFDs critical to small-boat fishing safety

Robert Woolsey | KCAW
SITKA, ALASKA (2011-06-27) The death of two Yakutat residents last week (6-20-11) brings to seven the number of commercial fishermen killed this year in Alaska – and the season is just getting started. The fact that all seven lost their lives in open boats – and all were wearing life jackets — has caught the attention of agencies involved in marine safety. There is consensus that it’s time for renewed focus on safety training for the small-boat fleet.

Southeast Musings: Legacy

She stood on the corner opposite Haisler’s Hardware, a small figure wrapped in a thin jacket and hugging herself against a cold wind huffing in from the sea.

She couldn’t have been more than eight or nine. Her back to me, she stepped off the curb and peered down the street, a small cell phone pressed to her ear. As school had just let out for the day, I assumed she was awaiting pickup. There she stood, scarcely out of traffic, talking in a voice too far away to hear, watching the road for someone I never saw arrive.  Read more->
