We hear all the time about the “decline of U.S. manufacturing” (84,000 Google hits) and “the death of American manufacturing” (15,400 Google hits). Similarly, there are frequent claims that “nothing is made in America anymore,” because all of the manufacturing jobs and production have been outsourced to places like China, Mexico, and Korea.
While it is true that the United States has lost more than 7 million manufacturing jobs since the late 1970s, that’s happened at the same time that U.S. manufacturing output has continued to expand and grow to new record levels almost every year. And in comparison to other countries, the United States remains by far the world’s largest manufacturer.

This has not been a good week for Alaska in Washington D.C. Our Congressional delegation has been on defense more than the Alaska Aces trying to kill a penalty.
- President Barack Obama in his State of the Union speech pledged to veto any legislation containing earmarks, which prompted the Senate Appropriations Chair to tell his colleagues don’t bother submitting them.
- Senator Claire McCaskill (D-Missouri) introduced legislation to restrict Alaska Native Corporations ability to bid on 8a contracts which would impact shareholder dividends.
- Senator John McCain (R-Arizona) introduced an amendment to eliminate subsidies for rural air service which would have a direct impact on Alaskan communities and a proposal to freeze federal agency spending has Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski worried about the Indian Health Services budget.

HAINES–Fourth quarters in basketball can be exciting when your team is slightly ahead but by no means has the game put away. Such was the case in Friday night’s Varsity game pitting the Glacier Bear boys against the Craig Panthers.
In a game that was never a run-away by either team, the score was 55-53 in Haines favor with 48 seconds remaining. The troublesome thing for Haines fans was that Craig had been hitting three-pointers all evening including six in the fourth quarter. In desperation, as the clock wound down, Craig committed fouls to get possession but they fouled Glacier Bear players who started to hit free throws when most needed. In the final seconds Tyler Swinton hit three from the line and Devin Braaten two, to finally put it away. The final score was Haines 61-56 over Craig. Read more->
By Gary Lidholm, on January 23rd, 2011 Although the Lady Bears lost the previous weekend against a much larger school in Sitka, they gave a good showing and fans knew that the team was strong. But it was a bit of a surprise as to how strong they would be at the Haines home-opener this past weekend when both the Jr.Varsity (JV) and Varsity literally cruised to easy victories over the Wrangell Lady Wolves.
In Friday’s action, the JV game ended with Haines victorious 40-21 and the Varsity score was Haines 61, Wrangell 30. Read more->

HAINES–A large crowd filled the Haines High School gymnasium for the Glacier Bear boys home opener conference game with the Petersburg Vikings Friday night. The Vikings won over Haines by 10 points in the Junior Varsity game and for awhile it looked like the Viking varsity might top that in the second match, at one point having a 14 point lead. But a 4th quarter rally by Haines brought the final score to only a four point loss, 43 -47.
Coming off the 3A state championship, the Haines Glacier Bears drew an expectant crowd to the auditorium where a pre-varsity game ceremony honored the 2010 team and unveiled the state championship banner which now graces the north wall of the gym. Read more->

Clear winter weather throughout most of Southeast Alaska should allow excellent viewing of the total lunar eclipse starting at 10:41 this evening and lasting 72 minutes.
A lunar eclipse occurs during a full moon when the sun, moon and earth are nearly directly in line, and the shadow of the earth falls across the moon. Total coverage of the moon by the earth’s shadow is expected to last from 10:41 to 11:53 Alaska Standard time.

By Editor, on November 11th, 2010 There are some things you just don’t mess with. And Veterans Day is one of them. Veterans Day originally was known as Armistice Day and marked the end of World War I at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11, 1918 – 11th hour, 11th day, 11th month. Congress designated that date as Armistice Day in 1926, and it became a national holiday in 1938. In 1954, President Eisenhower signed a bill designating Nov. 11 as Veterans Day. Read more->
