By Roger Maynard, on June 1st, 2011 When the Alaska Superior court ruled against the Haines Borough Assembly in the Karen Hess case, it was a wakeup call–not only to the assembly–but to every citizen in Haines who values the rule of law over political partisanship. Now that the assembly has egg on its face, and has needlessly blown a huge chunk of our tax money on legal expenses, they’ve been given the opportunity to make things right. Read more->

JUNEAU–Monday morning, the Alaska Senate unanimously passed legislation ensuring a voter intent priority for the counting of write-in ballots.
The bill clears up state election law, which failed U.S. Senate candidate Joe Miller sued over after last fall’s race in Alaska. Miller argued that ballots cast for his rival, Senator Lisa Murkowski, should be thrown out if voters didn’t perfectly write in her name. State and federal judges disagreed, but said the current statute is poorly worded and recommended clarifying it.

By Roger Maynard, on January 31st, 2011 HAINES–Karen Hess’s attorney reports that the case is “good to go,” and will likely be ready for a decision beginning February 16th.
Hess has appealed the Haines Borough Assembly’s decision to seat Greg Goodman without completing the investigation into his residency issues as required by borough ordinance. The delay in this case has been the result of civil filings and procedures that allow time for the other party to respond. The details of the case have been previously documented in the Haines Alaska News. Read more->

By Roger Maynard, on December 4th, 2010 One of the ads that blogger Biegel finds "chilling."
On November 19, 2010 the Alaska Public Officer’s Commission held a hearing regarding the complaint filed against Haines businesses by Anchorage blogger Linda Kellen Biegel. Biegel alleges some members of the Bill Thomas campaign arranged a series of election advertisements in the Chilkat Valley News supporting Thomas, in violation of APOC rules.
An APOC staff report issued on November 5 concluded that the “thank you” ads that did not use the word “vote” were not regulated campaign speech, and therefore only two ads that also contained the word “vote” are in question. Their recommendation was that the two businesses that posted those ads be fined $50 each, with the fines effectively reduced to zero due to mitigating factors–the newness and unfamiliarity of the law, and staff errors resulting in Mr. Studley receiving erroneous advice. By Roger Maynard, on October 27th, 2010 This is an example of an ad that Ms. Linda Kellen Biegel finds "profoundly chilling."
HAINES — The recent APOC complaint by the Democrats is just another indication of how little respect they have for the small business and the contribution they make to our economy. When a few of our local business men and women decided to help get Bill Thomas re-elected, they throught they were complying with APOC regulations. But APOC regulations aren’t easy to understand — especially this year. Read more->

THE PASSING of Ted Stevens in an airplane crash two weeks ago wasn’t just the passing of a well-known and effective politician, or the end of a chapter in Alaska’s history. Many Alaskans felt the loss on a more personal level.
