Does Murkowski’s write-in candidacy help or hurt Republicans?

ALASKA — Our instinctive response to Senator Lisa Murkowski’s choice to run against Joe Miller and Scott McAdams as a write-in candidate for the U.S. Senate seat she now holds was to wring our hands and ask, “What is she doing?  She’s splitting the conservative vote.  The Democrat could win.”  But in politics things are not always what they appear on the surface. Remembering Ted Stevens
In Alaska, it’s a small world…

THE PASSING of Ted Stevens in an airplane crash two weeks ago wasn’t just the passing of a well-known and effective politician, or the end of a chapter in Alaska’s history.  Many Alaskans felt the loss on a more personal level.

Alaska is a big place with a small population.  It’s not unusual to see the governor in the next row on a jet, or to pass members of our congressional delegation while being seated in a local restaurant.  Read more->

Once again, the heli-skiing issue is rearing it’s ugly head.  In a town with an economy on the verge of collapse, a heli-skiing industry with potential to carry local business through the late-winter and spring doldrums is being sabotaged by a small group who consider it their place to stop any activity that does not meet their approval.  Incredibly, we have a borough Assembly that is willing to listen to this handful of naysayers, rather than consider the needs and economic health of the majority of Haines residents.   Read more->
