Haines, a small town on the road system in the Alaskan wilderness, has more than the usual degree of political buzz going on, with the mayor, and all but one assembly seat up for either election or recall. The Alaska Cruise Association (ACA) has asked the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to dismiss an administrative appeal of the new cruise ship wastewater discharge permit filed by a Haines environmental activist.

“This appeal is really an attempt to derail a multi-year evaluative process that the Alaska Legislature put in place in April 2009 when it passed House Bill 134,” ACA wrote in its response.   Read more->

Cruise industry dismisses lawsuit
Settlement saves money, promotes economic development

Following the signing of legislation adjusting the head tax from $46 per passenger to $34.50, the Alaska Cruise Association (ACA) officially terminated its lawsuit against the state.

A stipulation filed with the U.S. District Court for Alaska dismisses with prejudice the lawsuit that was filed against the state last September.

“We are pleased to resolve this situation so amiably,” ACA President John Binkley said. “Senate Bill 312 sends a positive message that Alaska values its cruise visitors and the state is open for business.”

Cohen to Take Another Run at Cruise Industry
Activist plans to challenge relaxed discharge rules

House Bill 134, passed in April  of last year, allowed the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation to write permits with standards that are more reasonable than that set by a voter initiative in 2006. 

Last Thursday, the Alaska DEC released relaxed discharge rules – but everyone isn’t happy.

Court Orders Borough to pay Attorney’s Fees

In an order dated January 20th, 2010, Judge Patricia Collins ordered the Haines Borough to pay attorney fees totaling $15,322.50 to Mr. Kocher and Joe Geldhof, attorneys for the Plaintiffs in Gershon Cohen, et.al. vs. the Haines Borough.

Cohen and other interested parties filed a court case to contest the Haines Borough Canvassing Board decisions regarding the October election for Assembly Seat A, after candidate Gary Lidholm won the election by 2 votes. Judge Collins ordered the borough to count 5 rejected ballots, overturning the election in favor of candidate Daymond Hoffman. Read more->
