Pete Lapham passed away Sunday after a lengthy fight with cancer. He was 65.
Pete Lapham cared deeply about Haines. His infectious smile and easygoing personality were well known in the community, and he chipped in to help wherever he could.
His long history in Haines was one of constant involvement in the community, and he served Haines in a number of ways. He retired from the Alaska Department of Transportation after 32 years, and was a member of the Haines Volunteer Fire Department for 40 years. Over the years was a member of the American Legion, Elks, Haines Borough Assembly, Haines Energy & Sustainability Commission, Haines Borough Planning Commission, and the Chilkat Snowburners snowmachine club. For may years Pete and his wife, Diana, managed the Alcan 200 snowmachine race from the border to Dezedeash Lake on the Haines Highway; they were active in the Yukon snowmachine racing scene as well.
Pete was one of the charter board members of the Alaska Alliance for Commerce, Inc., publisher of the Haines Alaska News, where his knowledge of the community and its history was a valuable asset.
Pete loved Haines and its people, and he made a difference where he could. Haines is a better place for him having been part of it.

Services for Pete Lapham will be held 11:00 Thursday at the Chilkat Center, followed by a procession to graveside services at the Haines Cemetery. After the graveside services a potluck in Pete’s honor will be hosted by the Haines Elks and Emblem Club–they will provide the main course.

HAINES–When Jim Shook introduced the idea of allowing all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) on public roads at the June 14 meeting of the borough assembly, there was surprisingly little opposition. A few raised eyebrows maybe, but then, on reflection, acceptance that the idea just might be a good fit for Haines—a small town, off the beaten track, with folks who would like to conserve fuel by driving something more economical than a full-size car or pickup to haul a few groceries from the store, only a mile or two away. What could be wrong with that?
Now, four weeks later, proponents of the ordinance are starting to see some opposition. The proposed ordinance (Ordinance 11-06-269) is on the borough assembly’s calendar for its second (and final) reading at the Tuesday, 7/26 meeting. Read more->

GRAND RAPIDS, MINN.–Edgar Hetteen, the Roseau, Minn., native known as the grandfather of the snowmobile industry for co-founding the two main manufacturers still making them in northwest Minnesota, died Saturday in a Grand Rapids, Minn., nursing home. He was 90.
Beginning in the mid-1950s, Hetteen founded, with his brother, Allan, and brother-in-law, David Johnson, what became Polaris, in their hometown of Roseau.
Only a few years later, the self-driven Hetteen walked away and soon in nearby Thief River Falls, co-founded what became Arctic Cat Inc.

For 42 years the Canada, BC and Yukon governments have allowed the Alcan 200 to take place on the Haines Highway from 42 mile to Dezadeash Lake and back—a distance of 80 miles each way. The road will be closed to traffic for the duration of the race, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Alaska time (9 am to 4pm Yukon time.)
The race begins at 42 mile, just north of the Canadian Border station with the racers starting 30 seconds apart, two at a time from the largest machines to the smallest by the engine size. Read more->

Of 28 racers in the Alcan 200 Snowmobile Road Rally, 21 finished the race. Racers ran in snowy and windy conditions on the pass. Although turnout was somewhat less than in past years, a higher percentage of racers finished the race in spite of the bad weather.
