After a very long Denver winter with an overdose of “Tebow and Peyton Manning Mania” and radio talk shows about the Broncos, Nuggets, and Avalanche, a few of us breath deeply and say, “Thank goodness baseball season has finally arrived.” It’s opening week for major league baseball at last. By Roger Maynard, on January 25th, 2012 Overall winners, left to right: Randy Martin #3, Craig Hill #2, Jarrid Davy #1. Photo courtesy of Karen Hess.
Saturday’s Alcan 200 snowmachine road rally on the Haines Highway from the Canadian border to Dezadeash and return was won by Jarrid Davy of Whitehorse for the second year in a row.
According to race organizer Karen Hess, the race was fast but no new records were set, “This year there was $1,500 for the fastest local to finish and that was Chris Brooks. The money came from $1,000 Mary Miles in memory of Dennis, $200 Fogcutter Bar & $300 Howser’s IGA. The odd thing is that he won because he wasn’t the fastest but the only local to finish. There were two locals and Jack Smith Jr. didn’t finish, so the money went to Chris. Chris also got the RED LANTERN AWARD, for the last racer to finish the race in 2:46:10, with an average speed of 56.”
Overall winners:
Jarrid Davy 1st overall / Whitehorse / Time 1:18:11 / avg. speed 119.
Craig Hill 2nd overall / Fairbanks / Time 1:21:08 / avg speed 114.6
Randy Martin 3rd overall / Fairbanks / Time 1:31:10 / avg speed 102.

By Gary Lidholm, on December 15th, 2011 It was a typical Saturday morning stop at a residential coffee shop in Denver except that the place was festively decorated for the season. The “thirty-something” man ahead of me bought a Christmas hot chocolate and cookie for his young daughter who was with him. While he talked to another man, she began to color and draw on the paper provided by the shop. After a while her dad asked her, “What are you drawing, honey?” She looked up and said, “Can’t you tell daddy? It’s Tim Tebow.” Read more->
By Roger Maynard, on September 29th, 2011 Haines Mayor Jan Hill
Haines Borough Mayor Jan Hill was unable to attend the Chamber of Commerce candidates forum on Friday, September 23, at the library. Hill had prearranged meetings with Yukon officials in Whitehorse. She asked Chamber of Commerce officials if she could have a statement read at the candidates forum while she was away on borough business, but her request was denied–a departure from the way the Chamber handled similar situations in past years.
Mayor Hill apologized for her absence, but said the benefit to Haines was worth the trip. The following is her report from those meetings:

By Roger Maynard, on September 28th, 2011 After years of indecisiveness, the Haines Assembly was unanimous in its decision to raze the old school gym still standing at the corner of 3rd and Main Streets. The decision is based on recent information showing that restoration of the old building is too expensive, and the building is not ideal for either offices or a recreation center. There is currently no heat or electricity in the building, and it has been standing that way for at least 5 years.
A small group led by Joe Poor and Jack Wenner argued to keep the building, and said they were working on a business plan to keep the building open as a recreation center for the community, but their efforts were too little, too late. Read more->

HOMER — A packed room of angry and worried small businessmen fearful the federal government is about to bankrupt them got some simple advice Friday night on how to deal with the Washington, D.C. bureaucracy: “Send a letter.”
That was the best Glenn Merrill, assistant regional administrator for the National Marine Fisheries Service, could offer charter boat skippers facing imposition of what is being called a “halibut catch sharing” plan.

By Roger Maynard, on August 3rd, 2011 Pete Lapham
Pete Lapham passed away Sunday after a lengthy fight with cancer. He was 65.
Pete Lapham cared deeply about Haines. His infectious smile and easygoing personality were well known in the community, and he chipped in to help wherever he could.
His long history in Haines was one of constant involvement in the community, and he served Haines in a number of ways. He retired from the Alaska Department of Transportation after 32 years, and was a member of the Haines Volunteer Fire Department for 40 years. Over the years was a member of the American Legion, Elks, Haines Borough Assembly, Haines Energy & Sustainability Commission, Haines Borough Planning Commission, and the Chilkat Snowburners snowmachine club. For may years Pete and his wife, Diana, managed the Alcan 200 snowmachine race from the border to Dezedeash Lake on the Haines Highway; they were active in the Yukon snowmachine racing scene as well.
Pete was one of the charter board members of the Alaska Alliance for Commerce, Inc., publisher of the Haines Alaska News, where his knowledge of the community and its history was a valuable asset.
Pete loved Haines and its people, and he made a difference where he could. Haines is a better place for him having been part of it.
***
Services for Pete Lapham will be held 11:00 Thursday at the Chilkat Center, followed by a procession to graveside services at the Haines Cemetery. After the graveside services a potluck in Pete’s honor will be hosted by the Haines Elks and Emblem Club–they will provide the main course.

HAINES–When Jim Shook introduced the idea of allowing all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) on public roads at the June 14 meeting of the borough assembly, there was surprisingly little opposition. A few raised eyebrows maybe, but then, on reflection, acceptance that the idea just might be a good fit for Haines—a small town, off the beaten track, with folks who would like to conserve fuel by driving something more economical than a full-size car or pickup to haul a few groceries from the store, only a mile or two away. What could be wrong with that?
Now, four weeks later, proponents of the ordinance are starting to see some opposition. The proposed ordinance (Ordinance 11-06-269) is on the borough assembly’s calendar for its second (and final) reading at the Tuesday, 7/26 meeting. Read more->

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released their annual stock assessment report today. While the East Coast continues to struggle with overfishing, commercial stocks in the Pacific Ocean remain abundant and healthy overall.
Alaska’s stocks seem to be in particularly good shape by comparison. NOAA lists 40 stocks as subject to overfishing, and not one of those is in Alaska waters.

By Roger Maynard, on May 17th, 2011 Fishing Vessels Fools Gold, Pelican, and Mickey V, Haines, sport fresh bottom paint as they wait for the Monday evening high tide at the Haines Small Boat Harbor
HAINES–Spring weather arrived just in time to take advantage of spring tides for boat maintenance late last week. The boat harbor is filled with the sounds of power tools and other activity as Haines residents prepare for a busy summer season. Forecast for the rest of the week is continued warmer (mid-60′s) temperatures with a little rain.
A look at the long-range forecast from the National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center shows a probability of warmer than usual summer months in most of Alaska to the north of Haines. The same prediction for southeast Alaska shows equal chances of more or less rain, and equal chances of higher or lower temperatures. In plain English, that means the weatherman isn’t betting either way.
